Why Leadership Fails

and why authentic leadership is essential

Why leadership fails
Leadership Failures

We all have a general idea of what leadership entails, and there are plenty of resources that guide us in how to be a leader, what actions to take, and how to inspire. However, there is much less discussion on why leadership fails.

I recently encountered a situation where a leader, who usually advocated for togetherness and development of team members, instead resorted to fearmongering and sowing discourse within the entire team. The leader’s concerns may be valid however instilling fear into many instead of addressing the few people directly involved countered the dialogue she normally used. The leader’s talk and walk were not lining up in that moment.

This brings me to my first point - leaders fail when their actions do not match their words. Inspiring rhetoric is a key part of leadership, but when you do not follow through on your words, you are not a leader. People will only follow you if you demonstrate the qualities you speak.

Secondly, those who believe leadership is all about power will not understand the true meaning of leadership and will fail. I have seen a great many people begin with the best of intentions, only to be corrupted by the power they hold. Holding power only brings out what is already in you; if your true intentions for being a leader is for power, you will fail.

Thirdly, leaders fail when they think their title makes them a leader. Titles can be fabricated, and job descriptions adjusted. Have you heard of the term “dry promotion”? “Dry promotion” is when an organization gives an employee a new title, increases their responsibilities, and unfortunately is not compensated for the “expanded” duties. “Dry promotion” provides a false sense of power and further encourages behaviors counter to authentic leadership. True leaders lead with their actions, not their titles.

Finally, authentic action is necessary to inspire followership and stay true to your ideals. Next time you consider leadership, also think about why leaders fail, as understanding these failures will help you become a true leader and influence those around you.
